Dormont's Hollywood Theater will host a Battle of the Bands tomorrow, Sunday, May 19.
Giant Eagle and Shop 'n Save are participating until May 29.
Giant Eagle and Shop 'n Save customers are offering a gasoline promotion through Wednesday, May 29. Customers who spend $50 using a Giant Eagle Advantage Card at Pittsburgh-area Giant Eagle stores will receive double fuelperks! at GetGo fuel and convenience store locations. In a similar promotion, Shop 'n Save shoppers will receive 20 cents off per gallon of gas for every $50 they spend on groceries. The promotions come just in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, when millions are expected to travel the nation’s highways. The upcoming career fairs will include employers from UPMC, Goodwill, Giant Eagle, PNC Bank, University of Pittsburgh, U.S. Steel, St. Clair Hospital, Asko Inc. and others.
WorkAble will be holding a career fair from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, May 21, at the nearby South Hills Interfaith Ministry offices in Bethel Park. If you can't make it the SHIM career fair, another will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, May 22, at the Millvale Community Center. The career fairs will include employers from UPMC, Goodwill, Giant Eagle, PNC Bank, The University of Pittsburgh, U.S. Steel, St. Clair Hospital, Asko Inc. and others. Aspiring young chefs and little foodies are invited to get a taste of just how fun food can be at Simon Kidgits Club Lil Chefs, an annual Simon malls event designed to get kids learning about the craft of cooking and all things food. South Hills Village’s Lil Chefs event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, in the lower level north court as part of a series of children’s culinary programs being hosted at approximately 100 Simon malls across the country. The hands-on atmosphere of Lil Chefs will engage both parents and children in exploring the endless imaginative possibilities of pairing creativity with cuisine. The art show is today, Friday, and Saturday at Dormont Municipal Center.
The lobby of Dormont Municipal Center is a little more colorful this weekend. Through this Saturday, May 18, the 11th annual Spring Art Exhibit and art sale is in the lobby of municipal center. The art show is sponsored by Primary Colors Art Guild and LifeSpan's Hillsdale Community Resource Center. Artists will be at the municipal center today, Friday, between 6 and 9 p.m. and tomorrow, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to show off their work. The event features appetizers, a Chinese auction and raffles. Pittsburgh artist Robert Daley will judge the event. Want to try your luck at a Powerball lottery ticket? You only need one $2 ticket to play. The Powerball jackpot was boosted to $550 million, or a $350.1 million cash prize for the Saturday, May 18, drawing after none of the tickets sold Wednesday matched the winning numbers. The multi-state mega-lottery had rolled to a $475 million value after Wednesday's drawing, but increased by $75 million Thursday afternoon as a result of strong ticket sales. The $550 million jackpot is the second-largest jackpot in the game’s history. The largest was won last Nov. 28, 2012, when a $587.5 million jackpot was shared by two tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri. Local business owners say the construction frustration has been worth it, and they’re looking forward to the next phase of work.
Customers in the 700 and 800 blocks of Brookline Boulevard can now walk on solid ground when they visit their favorite businesses. Sidewalks were poured in front of several businesses Wednesday and Thursday, and although a chain link fence still separates the storefronts from the road, business owners said there are unmistakable signs of progress. “It’s so nice to walk on real ground,” said Ben Haake, co-owner of Cannon Coffee. “The planting beds are going in, and we know there are benches on the way. It’s been fun to watch all this.
