Oops, again, tried to insert a return but it published the comment instead. Anyway, my numbers wereRead More drawn from pretty extensive research--they're a bit high but that's because it's far better to estimate high than low when dealing with potential business expenses. With a family to support I want to make sure I don't end up with a failed business, after which I couldn't even collect unemployment!

Jason: I worked for several decades as a Small Business Advocate, and finally as a Small BusinessRead More Liaison Officer. I traveled 3 times a year to conferences in the Mid-Atlantic Region, served as a judge for Regional Small Business of the Year, and, in short, I think I'm fairly well qualified to speak about small businesses. Of the 100 small businesses that will start this week, 99 will fall by the wayside by this same date next year. Its an awful statistic, but all of the roadblocks you noted are routinely ignored by would be entreprenuers. As a speaker once quipped in one of our workshops, "I finally figured out how to make a small fortune in small business. Start with a large one." If you're serious about starting a business, you'll need to do market studies, register your business name, and always keep in mind that the United States Government is the biggest spender of all. The Small Business Administration can be your friend, but you have to have all of your "stuff" wired pretty tight. Good luck if you decide to proceed. If you decide not to, know that reaching a lofty goal of independence in the market place is not easy.

John, yeah, I knew that much. However, there is a very high success rate for the type of business IRead More want to open based on my market research, so that's a good starting point. It's also why I'm saying I need several hundred grand rather than just 50. You need money to get you through minimum six months to a year before the business can hope to break even.

James, I've restored some posts that filtered into the wrong end of our system here. Is that better?
James Barth June 19, 2013 at 07:46 pm
Mr. Healy, Thank you for restoring the first post, and in the proper order. Sincerely, James Barth

If you don't have time to wait for the trolley to pass, how do you have time to be rushed to theRead More hospital in an ambulance, and replace the car you just totaled? Slow down and smell the roses people. Where you are going is NOT as important as getting there safely.

Really simple solution - take your foot off the accelerator and go the speed limit and don't driveRead More when you've been drinking. It's really not that hard to slow down and go the speed limit. Reckless drivers should be pulled over - whether they've been drinking or not. The biggest cause of death on our roads is not drunk driving but speeding. Slow down people. If only more municipalities would try to make their roads safer by targeting speeders.

Once you know this; then you adhere the rest of the time. They enforce that 25mph and have everyRead More right to. I avoid that road as I like to travel faster than I could on horseback.
Bob Dobbs June 17, 2013 at 09:37 pm
maybe it's time to increase that antiquated speed limit .

Can you get on any of these committees? Maybe you can have your ideas put out for everyone. Life isRead More so short don't let yourself be baited into anger. I know that is easy to say and hard to follow. Good Luck.
