Do you think you could keep your nose in a book for 24 hours? Eljay's Used Books in Dormont is challenging you to try.
The West Liberty Avenue book store will host a 24-hour read-a-thon to support the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council.
The books wil open at noon on Saturday, Oct. 13 and close at noon on Sunday, Oct. 14. Participating readers will bring in donations by asking friends and family to sponsor them as they attempt to read for 24 hours. All proceeds will benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council.
Eljay’s co-owner Chris Rickert hosted the event in 2008 and 2010 at Joseph-Beth Booksellers. Some readers will attempt to read for the full 24 hour period—which includes break time for bathroom visits and snacks—to win special prizes. But of course, short-term readers also are welcome to participate.
The event is open to readers of all ages (children will require parental supervision) and to readers of any type of reading materials, including audio books. Eljay’s will also lend used titles to participating readers during the event.
Approximately 45 readers have participated in past events, but only five have completed the 24-hour challenge.
