PA Moose Convention Returns To Pittsburgh

It’s that time again, as the 2013 PMA Annual Convention returns to Pittsburgh, and specifically the Hilton Doubltree Hotel in Green Tree.

Hundreds of officers and members of Moose lodges from all over the Commonwealth started to descend on Pittsburgh starting on Thursday. A charity golf tournament was held at Hickory Heights Golf Club.

According to the pamoose.org website, “The Loyal Order of Moose is a fraternal and service organization founded in 1888, with nearly 1 million men in roughly 2,000 Lodges, in all 50 states and four Canadian provinces, plus Great Britain and Bermuda.”

The organization is involved in various charitable endeavors, including funds for Arthritis research and providing safety vests for police officers. Beechview 609 also includes a Moose Legion branch, which also is involved in various charitable events. In addition, a group of Legionnaires erects dozens of American Flags along Broadway Avenue in Beechview for Flag Day.

Also according to its website, the PA Moose, “along with other units of Moose International, the Loyal Order of Moose supports the operation of Mooseheart Child City & School, a 1,000-acre community for children and teens in need, located 40 miles west of Chicago; and Moosehaven, a 63-acre retirement community for its members near Jacksonville, FL. Additionally, Moose Lodges conduct approximately $50 million worth of community service (counting monetary donations and volunteer hours worked) annually.”

This year’s convention is unique for Pennsylvania lodges as Supreme Governor Joseph Koons visits. Koons, the Chief Providing Officer of the Moose, is the first Pennsylvanian to hold the post in decades. He is from Danville, Montour County, which is near the Susquehanna River.

The PA Moose convention wraps up on Sunday.
