Dig Dormont Fundraiser This Saturday

The organization will hold a fundraiser at Mexi Casa on Saturday night to raise money for planting in the borough.

Dig Dormont members are hoping a fundraiser will raise money to help make Dormont more beautiful this summer.

The organization will hold a fundraiser at restaurant on Saturday, June 23, from 8 p.m. to midnight. A portion of the proceeds will be put toward beautifying the borough.

“There are a lot of potential areas that could use some attention,” said Dig Dormont member Mary Jo Maggio.

Passive Park at the corner of Hillsdale and West Liberty avenues is one of those areas, she said.

Dig Dormont members hope to plant perennials along the retaining wall at the site. The group was able to salvage stones from South Hills Theater after it was torn down, and Maggio said they hope to build some form of artwork or possibly a new seating area at the park.

They also hope to use old brick from borough streets to build a walkway in the park, she said.

“We’re trying to take some things that are from here and put it back into the borough,” Maggio said.

She said the group also wants to beautify and maintain areas around the trolley tracks on Broadway Avenue, and areas around borough buildings. It also wants to create green spaces along West Liberty Avenue, she said.

On Saturday, Dig Dormont members will be guest bartenders at Mexi Casa, serving up special drinks like Home-Grown Mojitos, Fresh-Brewed Ice Picks and Pudding Shots (cash only).

Maggio said people have been supportive of Dig Dormont in the past and that the group is grateful for the volunteer help it receives.

Saturday’s event is a way for everyone to have fun while they help out, she said.

“It should just be a fun time,” Maggio said. “We’re hoping to get a lot of people stopping in for a specialty drink and to help us out.”
