South Park Ice Rink to Close for Season Sunday Night

On the positive side, it's a sign that winter is coming to an end.

UPDATE (March 15, 2:41 p.m.): The South Park and North Park ice skating rinks will both close for the season on Sunday night, March 17.

There's still time for one more skating session. The rink will be open today, Sunday, for sessions from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., 4:30 to 7 p.m. and 7:30 to 9 p.m.

The Allegheny County Parks Department will open the South Park and North Park ice skating rinks on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, weather and conditions permitting. The county's 2012-13 ice skating season will run through mid-March.

Admission to each rink costs $5 per day per adult aged 18-59 and $3 per adult aged 60 and older. Children aged 17 and younger can also pay $3 per admission.

Senior season passes cost $25 (ages 60 and older). Admission is free for active volunteer firefighters and volunteer emergency medical technicians with a Park Pass Program photo ID.

Skates rental costs $2 per day, and skates sharpening, costs $4.50.

South Park Ice Skating Rink

Tuesdays 10 a.m.-noon and 7:30-9 p.m. Wednesdays 3:30-7 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m. Thursdays 7:30-9 p.m. Fridays 10 a.m.-noon, 3:30-7 p.m. and 7:30-10 p.m. Saturdays 11 a.m.-4 p.m., 4:30-7 p.m. and 7:30-10 p.m. Sundays 11 a.m.-4 p.m., 4:30-7 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m.

North Park Ice Skating Rink

Tuesdays 7:30-9 p.m. Wednesdays 9-11 a.m., noon-3 p.m., 4:30-7 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m. Thursdays 7:30-9 p.m. Fridays 9-11 a.m., noon-3 p.m., 4:30-7 p.m. and 7:30-10 p.m. Saturdays 11 a.m.-4 p.m., 4:30-7 p.m. and 7:30-10 p.m. Sundays 11 a.m.-4 p.m., 4:30-7 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m. 

Both rinks will be open from noon to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and will hold regular hours on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day.

Both rinks are closed on Mondays (except Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, MLK Day and Presidents Day). They are also closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Due to high school hockey games, the South Park Rink will be closed on Jan. 9 and 10, and the North Park Rink will be closed on Jan. 23 and 24.

Special Ice Skating Events

Family Skate Wednesdays $10 per family (two adults and a maximum of four children), 4:30-7 p.m., every Wednesday Sweetheart Couples Skate Buy one admission and get one for free for couples aged 17 and younger, 7:30-10 p.m., Valentine's Day Community Days Program Group discount rate of $2 per person for any municipality, community development group, employees group or association, or community-oriented association. Rink Rentals

The ice skating rinks are also available for rent throughout the season. The cost is $100 per hour when scheduled two weeks in advance and $125 per hour for same-day rentals.

Free & Paid Ice Skating Lessons
