KO Board Members Removed from Committee Positions

Three Keystone Oaks School Board members were removed from their positions as committee chairmen last week.

A meeting that lasted more than three hours ended with three school board members losing their committee positions.

According to board members Dave Hommrich and Joe Finucan, during an executive session following last week's meeting, they and board member Dan Domalik were removed from their positions as committee chairman.

“There really wasn’t any discussion about it,” Hommrich said. “I assume we’re still on the committees, but to be honest I don’t know. We got very little information except that we had been dismissed.”

Finucan said board President Gary Alward did not provide a reason for making the change.

“Gary just said he’s opening the committees back up and anyone who wants to apply should call him and let him know they were interested,” Finucan said.

Before the change, Domalik had been the chairman of the Finance and Facilities Committee, Finucan chaired the Communications Committee and Hommrich chaired the Technology Committee.

Finucan said Alward is now the chair of Finance and Facilities, board member Marian Randazzo will chair the Communications Committee and board member Robert Brownlee will chair the Technology Committee.

Finucan said he thought the discussion of board positions should have happened during a public meeting.

Attorney Lisa Colautti of the Law Offices of Ira Weiss, which represents the school district, said she could not comment on specific discussion that occurred during executive session.

“Appointing chairs to committees in general is the prerogative of the board president, and reminding board members of how they are to behave and what information they are to keep private in terms of the district is suitable for executive session discussion,” Colautti said.

Colautti said her comment is general, and is not directed at any specific situation that occurred during last week’s executive session.

Neither board President Gary Alward nor Vice President Raeann Lindsey returned calls prior to the publication of this article. Hommrich said Lindsey did not attend last week’s executive session.

District Public Relations Director Jim Cromie said the district could not comment on executive session matters.
