KO Board Approves New Books, New Hires, and Transportation Contract

Notes from the April 18 Keystone Oaks School Board meeting.

Keystone Oaks School Board held its regular meeting April 18.

During the meeting, the board unanimously approved the following items:

  • The proposed 2013-2014 Allegheny Intermediate Unit Program of Studies Budget was approved. The budget totals $3,809,028.00. The Keystone Oaks School District’s contribution to the AIU Program of Services budget is $36,454.83.
  • Superintendent William Stropkaj was authorized to sign electronic agreements with the Department of Education, per a resolution that is attached to this article in PDF format, as part of the meeting agenda.
  • The board approved second readings of the following revised district policies: graduation requirements; child and student abuse; tobacco-free environment; and school visitors. The policies are attached to this article in PDF format, as part of the meeting agenda. The district is currently in the process of reviewing and updating many of its policies.
  • High school teacher Suzanne Deemer will attend the AP Biology Academy conference at Shippensburg University from June 24 to 28. The cost to the district is $1,752.80.
  • The McGraw-Hill Wonders Reading Series Program K-5 will be purchased for the district at a cost not to exceed $180,000. Assistant Superintendent Kathy Foster said the actual cost likely will be closer to $170,000, but that the cost is dependent upon the supplemental materials the district purchases with the program, which the district is still reviewing.
  • Tom Burchett resigned his position as varsity football assistant coach, effective April 5, 2013.
  • Angele Hagy was hired as a substitute secretary in the district.
  • Brian Slagle was hired as a substitute custodian in the district.
  • Kevin Butler was approved as the middle school girls softball assistant coach for the 2012-2013 school year. The stipend for the position will be $2,510.00.
  • The Student Summer Work Program was approved at a starting rate of $7.25 per hour and an increase of $0.25 per year of employment.
  • The Special Education/Act 372 Transportation Contract was awarded to First Student for the 2013/2014, 2014/2015, and 2015/2016 school years. District finance direct Eric Brandenburg said the cost to the district likely would be $350,000 per year because that has been the cost in past years, but that there still is a possibility of renegotiating that price.
