KO Baksetball Senior Scores 1,000 Career Point

KO High School basketball senior Alexa Xenakis scored her 1,000 career point in Thursday's game.

It was four years in the making, and in one game senior Alexa Xenakis became only the second girls basketball player to score more than 1,000 career points.

Xenakis scored 20 points in Thursday's 59-42 win over South Allegheny, giving the shooting guard 1,015 career points.

“It was awesome because I didn’t think I’d actually do it until this year,” she said.

Xenakis has played basketball since she was in third grade, and has been building career points since her freshman year of high school. She was a little stunned when she reached her 1,000 point goal, she said, but the moment also gave her mixed emotions.

“Last night was really emotional,” Xenakis said. “It was a happy night, but really sad too because it hadn’t hit me that that’s the last time I’ll play the home court.”

Xenakis said she doesn’t really remember her first high school basketball game, but she does remember how encouraging and supportive her older teammates were.

“I remember how great they were and they were always encouraging me to shoot,” she said. “They were a big part of me getting 1,000 points. This is something they helped me do.”

Xenakis said she plans to play basketball in college and is currently looking at about six different schools. She said she’ll start narrowing down her choices after basketball season, because she has a new goal to reach.

Two regular season games and at least one postseason game remain for the playoff-bound team, and Xenakis is on the heels of Mame Brumbaugh’s 1,031 record for career points. Brumbaugh’s record was established between 1998-2001.

She’s also hoping for the best for her team.

“I just want the team to win,” Xenakis said. “The win got us a spot in playoffs so it’s really exciting for all of us.”
