The 12th-seeded Lady Golden Eagles are coming off a 62-28 victory against the New Brighton Lady Lions in Friday's preliminary round.

The win was the first WPIAL playoff victory for the Keystone Oaks girls’ program in 15 years, and coach Gene Mercuri wants to build on it.

“It was a program-changer for sure. It was a monumental step for us to take, but we’re not satisfied yet. We want to keep going,” he said.

Mercuri and the Lady Golden Eagles realize the challenge Avonworth poses.

“They’re a tough team. They have two scorers that average nearly 20 points per game. They like to get up and down the floor, just like we do,” he said. “I think these two teams are mirror images of each other. This should make for a good one.”

The Lady Antelopes are 19-3, but just 3-2 in their last five games.

Led by Lauren Mayernik, who’s averaging just over 19 points per game, Avonworth is predicted to be included as one of the state qualifiers from the WPIAL.

Known for their stifling defense, Avonworth has only given up 40 points in one game this season, which included a dominating 71-9 performance against Brentwood in December.

The winner will advance to the WPIAL AA quarterfinals.
