Aiken Elementary Shears Hair For Kids With Cancer

The fundraiser was aiming for at least $1,000, but so far, $7,500 has been raised and the money's still being counted.

Aiken Elementary students, teachers, parents and staff exceeded goals Friday, as they shaved their heads during a St. Baldrick's cancer research benefit.

Bill Opperman, organizer and kindergarten teacher, said they raised $7,500 last week and still had checks and monetary donations to count.

"I'm hoping to reach $10,000," he said.

The school eclipsed a $1,000 goal, which was set to match results of a juvenile diabetes fundraiser last fall.

"The Aiken students, staff, parents, family and community once again blew us out of the water with their support and helped us surpass the goal seven times over," he said.

"It is such a wonderful way to show our students that the world is bigger than our own lives and kids are facing difficult days due to cancer.

"Thankfully Aiken has not had any students who have had to face such trials, but if the day comes I'm sure we will rally around them with the support our students and families have shown again and again," he said.
