Epic, Legendary, Absolutely Ridiculous?

An evening experience a classic 80's movie on the big screen.

Depending on your point of view, some would say the events of a recent Saturday for a friend and I could be described as all three. The night started with a dear friend coming over. I had been ‘primping’ for hours researching ideas until I came upon my final wardrobe and hair selection. I would be sporting a 2002 prom dress, with a jean jacket, and hair slightly curled, teased, hairsprayed (sorry ozone!) and pinned to one side. Are we catching a theme here?

I will go on to say that my friend showed up in a white mini skirt, jean jacket, HEAVY pink eye make-up, headband, and jelly shoes.

If you think we were heading to the Hollywood Theater of Dormont to watch Pretty In Pink, you would be absolutely correct.  Prior to the movie we strutted down West Liberty Avenue and had a few drinks at the Apple Inn (Dormonster is really good!). We tried to assure the bartender that we did not typically dress like this. He gave us a kind smile and assured us we didn’t look ridiculous. We knew better. We did get a few interesting looks from other patrons. However, we did not let that bring us down; We were excited to watch a classic Molly Ringwald movie on the big screen. I mean really, who wouldn’t be?

We took a few moments prior to entering the theater to take a photograph to document this monumental occasion. It was complete ridiculousness in all of its glory. I was soaking it in. As we entered the theater the man behind the counter quickly took notice of our outfits and asked for our pictures. We were rock stars. We would be legends.

After we purchased our tickets ($7) and bought a large pop corn for $3.75 (seriously, pop corn at a theater for $3.75, yes please!) we meandered up to our seats. As we carefully selected our seats, we began having discussions with three other women. They had obviously taken notice of our outfits, truth be told we were a little hard to miss, and quickly formed a bond over our love of cheesy 80’s movies. As my friend and I sat there anxiously awaiting for the lights to dim and the show to start we smiled and laughed, knowing that this experience defined our friendship. There are very few people that would have indulged me on such an excursion. I was living this up.

This was my friends first time seeing the movie. What an epic way to see Pretty In Pink for the first time on a big screen. It was an experience I wish I could have had (I was in diapers when the movie originally came out). As much as I do love me some Ms. Ringwald, I also enjoy the performances of Andrew McCarthy (Blane) and Jon Cryer (Duckie).  Oh, Brat Pack how I long for you. The plot of the unpopular non-wealthy high school girl falling for the prince of the school all while missing her best friend’s feelings for her, doesn’t it just make you yearn for more? I know it does for me.

After the movie concluded, we headed back to my house via West Liberty Avenue.  This time some young girls were screaming comments at us. My friend and I looked at each other and laughed as to say ‘If only these girls knew.’

Once back to my place my friend and I decided that being dressed up was not going to be a one-time deal, but rather a tradition, if you will. These are the details for the next get together. This is what I have distributed to some of my acquaintances. Please feel free to attend. It is sure to be a memorable experience!

"You know what's wrong with you, Miss Whoever-You-Are? You're chicken, you've got no guts. You're afraid to stick out your chin and say, 'OK, life's a fact, people do fall in love, people do belong to each other, because that's the only chance anybody's got for real happiness.' You call yourself a free spirit, a wild thing, and you're terrified somebody's going to stick you in a cage. Well, baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it's not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somaliland. It's wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself." - Breakfast at Tiffany's
