Summertime Is Grilling Time

Safety Tips to Make Your Grilling Experience Safe.

Summertime is always grilling time.  But being safe is of utmost importance.

According to The National Fire Protection Agency, from 2004-2008 U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 7,700 structure fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues per year.

These 7,700 fires caused an average of 13 civilian deaths, 120 civilian injuries and over $70 million in property damage. Gas grills were involved in an average of 6,200 home fires and charcoal grills were involved in 1,300 structure fires.

Most of us cover our grills over the winter.  Your grill being covered over winter is an inviting place for rodents and birds to make their home for the winter.  Uncover your grill and do a thorough inspection of the grill, making sure no animals have nested through the winter.  Check the gas tubes that go to the burner for spiders and other small insects who will nest here and clog the tubes.  Check the burner to make sure it is in working condition and not rusted.  If the burner is rusted or not intact, replace it.

Remember if there is any doubt, change it out.

The most important thing to check on your grill is the main hose running to your propane cylinder.  Spray the hose with a soap and water solution looking for bubbles.  If any bubbles are present replace the hose immediately.  Also check for cracks, and rodent bites, if any of these are present replace it.

Remember propane and BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.  The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.  Always keep children and pets away from the grill.  Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat build up from the grill and in the trays below the grill.

Lastly, never leave your grill unattended!! Once your inspection and repairs are complete you are ready to grill.  When lighting a gas grill always leave the lid open while lighting and follow the instructions in your users manual.

For those who use a charcoal grill, there are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel. If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use. When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.
