Senator Jane Orie Resigns

She faces sentencing on corruption charges June 4.

State Sen. Jane Orie, R-McCandless today resigned her seat, two weeks before she is to be sentenced for using her state-funded staff for political work.

In a statement posted on her website, Orie said, “It is with utmost humility and regret that I must announce my resignation as Senator, representing the 40th Senatorial District, effective May 21, 2012.  It has been my honor to have served the constituents of Northern Allegheny County and Southern Butler County for the past 11 years in the Senate of Pennsylvania. I am grateful for all the support I have received over the years and for the opportunity to represent the 40th Senatorial District and the wonderful people and communities that make it one of the best places to live.”

Orie was convicted in March on 14 criminal counts. Her sentencing is set for June 4. She is under house arrest until that time and is being monitored through the use of an electronic bracelet.

The 40th District includes all of Ross Township and West View Borough, as well as Shaler, Hampton, Marshall, Pine, Richland and West Deer townships and Franklin Park. It also extends north into Butler County and includes Cranberry Township.

Orie’s sister, State Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin, was accused of similar charges last week. She has temporarily stepped down from the bench until the case is settled, and maintains her innocence.
