New Law Could Allow Solar Panels on Dormont Rooftops

Monday's Dormont Council meeting will start with two public hearings, both addressing possible additions to Dormont rooftops.

The first is the possible addition of a Sprint Antenna to the roof of Dormont Municipal Center. Sprint currently has three antennas on the roof, and a fourth—a 4G antenna—would be added. The borough's lease with Sprint would be amended before the antenna is added. The Planning Commission recommended moving forward with this plan, but work is not to begin until the lease amendment is approved by council.

A second public hearing will be held to discuss a local law that would allow solar panels to be placed on rooftops of borough buildings. In 2011, the borough began working with other municipalities through the Council of Neighboring Communities to develop a uniform local law allowing solar panels on building rooftops. The project was funded through a SunShot grant from the Federal Government. The law would provide specific rules for putting solar panels on rooftops, but does not require anyone to install them.

Updates on the West Liberty Avenue Redevelopment Project, the Comprehensive Plan, and traffic calming on Voelkel and Belrose avenues also will be provided.

The meeting is Monday, June 3, at 7 p.m. in Dormont Municipal Center. To view the entire agenda and see more information about the public hearings, see the Dormont Borough website.
