Friends of Dormont Pool To Buy Diving Board

The group is spending about $3,735, plus installation, to give the Dormont Pool its first diving board in about a decade.

After about a decade of not having one, the will once again have a diving board.

The Friends of Dormont Pool will spend about $3,735, plus installation, for a one-meter-high board, Councilman John Maggio said at Monday’s recreation and community affairs committee meeting.

“It’s good news there. The pool is obviously one of the jewels of this town and each and every year, we try to add a little something to it to make it more attractive,” committee Chairman Drew Lehman said.

At one time, the pool had three diving boards, but they eventually broke.

Lehman and Maggio weren’t sure why the boards weren’t replaced, but said they were missed.

“We’ve heard from people who are 50 … people who are 20, that they miss the diving board,” Lehman said.

“I myself always thought (getting a new board) would happen. It was just a matter of getting everything else done first,” Maggio said.

The borough has enough liability insurance to cover the diving board, Maggio said. The new board will be placed where the former board was, along the nine-foot-deep section.

Lehman said he would put on the agenda for council’s February meeting the idea of making pool membership free for borough seniors. Last year, senior membership cost $50.

Greg Saulsbery, the borough’s new recreation director, said he was looking into ways to bring more money in for the pool, including expanding sponsorships and day camps.

He’d also like to see if a radio station would broadcast from the pool on opening day.
