Dormont Traffic Commission Makes Dell Ave. Recommendations

Of the two recommendations, the commission favors resricting morning through-traffic on Dell, Annapolis and Raleigh.

The Dormont Traffic and Parking Planning Commission has two recommendations for council to consider in hopes of reducing morning traffic on Dell Avenue.

The first alternative, which the commission favors, would prevent through traffic entering from McFarland Road onto Dell, Annapolis and Raleigh avenues between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., commission member John Sparvero said Monday at the borough’s public safety committee meeting.

The second option would prevent right turns from Hillsdale Avenue onto Voelkel and Mattern avenues between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

The goal is to direct motorists from communities south of Dormont onto West Liberty Avenue and Banksville Road.

Sparvero said the board felt first alternative would affect Dormont residents less than that second.

The borough would need permission from Mount Lebanon to place “no left turn” signs along eastbound McFarland at Dell, Annapolis and Raleigh, he said.

Mayor Tom Lloyd said he wondered how receptive Mount Lebanon officials would be.

Sparvero said he would try to talk to Mount Lebanon officials.

Joan Hodson, the public safety chairwoman, requested the recommendations be placed on council's May 31 agenda meeting for discussion.

In other traffic business, council will have to vote whether to keep the stop sign at Dell and Park avenues. The sign was put up temporarily earlier this year to see if it helped reduce speeding on Dell.
