Dormont Council Seeks Letters of Interest for Boards, Commissions

Council reorganized Tuesday, and seeks input from the community about borough issues.

New members were sworn in Tuesday evening, and several items regarding appointments to committees and other positions were tabled to allow for community input.

Councilman John Maggio and new council members Valerie Martino and Onnie Costanzo were sworn in. Council then appointed McCartney as president and Joan Hodson as vice president, each by a 5-2 vote.

At McCartney’s request, council voted to table several items related to appointments to other borough positions. Motions to appoint people to the Zoning Hearing Board, Civil Service Commission and Recreation Board were tabled until February.

McCartney said he thinks council should look at reappointments of boards and commissions, as well as non-union employees.

“Even though most of those folks have served ably over the years, I think we need to think about drawing on some of our younger people and some people who have not had the opportunity to serve on these boards and commissions,” he said.

A motion to reappoint Deron Gabriel as borough solicitor also was tabled until February.

McCartney read a list of which council members were to serve on committees, but said those appointments could change at the February meeting. They are as follows:

  • Finance and Legal Committee—Onnie Costanzo (chair), Laurie Malka and John Maggio
  • Public Safety and Public Service Committee—Joan Hodson (chair), Valerie Martino, Laurie Malka
  • Recreation and Community Affairs Committee—Valerie Martino (chair), Eugene Barilla, John Maggio
  • Property, Supplies and Planning Committee—Laurie Malka (chair), Eugene Barilla, Onnie Costanzo

Those who want to be considered for open board positions should submit a letter of interest by Jan. 17 to borough council via Gino Rizza or secretary Vickie McGurk at the Dormont Municipal Center.
