Dormont Council Meeting Notes

2012 budget, payments and purchases on agenda for approval at the Dec. 5 meeting.

Here’s a roundup of some items that were discussed at Monday’s Dormont Council meeting. The following items have not been approved. They will be on the Dec. 5 meeting agenda, and council plans to vote on them then.

Council plans to:

  • Approve the tax rate, budget, and tax anticipation loan for the year 2012. The proposed tax rate will remain at 14 mills. The proposed budget includes a general fund of $7,142,941; sewer fund of $1,802,000; capital fund budget of $550,000; and liquid fuels fund of $188,500. The proposed tax anticipation loan would be in amount of $1.3 million and would be paid off by May 31, 2012.
  • Approve the fee schedule for designate parking spaces in the borough.
  • Approve the fourth and final payment to SHACOG for Triton Services, in the amount of $2,409.45, for manhole rehabilitation. The borough received a grant for this work, in which the borough must pay back 45 percent of the project amount.
  • Approve the fifth payment to Niando Construction, in the amount of $5,259.20, for consent order inspections and repairs. The consent order is a federal order to regulate levels of water flow through sewer systems.
  • Approve a payment application to SHACOG for Robinson Pipe Cleaning, in the amount of $16,905.75, for a closed circuit television. The closed circuit system will be used to televise the sewer system and determine where repairs must be made, in accordance with the consent order.
  • Approve a payment application to A. Merante Construction, in the amount of $22,464.44, for the 2011 road reconstruction program.
  • Approve the second and final payment to T.A. Robinson Asphalt Paving, in the amount of $18,013.83, for the 2010 road program.

  • Councilwoman Laurie Malka asked council to consider a bonus for borough manager Gino Rizza, in amount of $7,500.
  • Audience members raised concerns about safety issues regarding poor lighting at night in the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Potomac Avenue. Audience members suggested that reflectors at crosswalks and better lighting could alleviate problems. Cassie Gillen also noted that the handicap sign outside of Cassandra’s Florals isn’t working properly.
  • A gentleman in the audience asked if there was truth to a rumor that the borough would consider merging its police department with that of the City of Pittsburgh. Rizza said there is no truth to that rumor, and council agreed.
  • An audience member associated with Pitcher Park requested that council vote to amend the April 5 approved motion regarding the proposed skate park to reflect a one-year extension of the completion date of the park. He said financial roadblocks resulted when the group was disassociated with another nonprofit group and had to re-apply for nonprofit status.

The next Dormont Council meeting is Monday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. in the borough building on Hillsdale Avenue.
