Dormont Council Appoints Newest Member

Council appointed Jeffrey Fabus Monday to fill the vacant seat.

Jeffrey Fabus is the newest Dormont Borough Councilman.

Council voted Monday night to appoint Fabus to fill the seat left vacant by last month's resignation of former Councilwoman Laurie Malka. Fabus will serve the remainder of her term, which ends Dec. 31, 2013.  He said, for now, that he intends to run for reelection for a full term next year.

A motion first was made by Councilman John Maggio to appoint Matt Hamilton, which was seconded by Eugene Barrilla. That motion failed 2-4.

A second motion was then made by Councilwoman Valerie Martino to appoint Fabus, which was seconded by Onnie Costanzo. That motion carried 4-2, with Maggio and Barilla opposed.

Fabus, 52, has lived in Dormont for nearly 40 years. He and his wife, Christy, have five children and two grandchildren. Fabus is a systems support analyst for UPMC, where he has worked for 25 years. Fabus is a graduate of Keystone Oaks High School and has been a member of the Dormont Athletic Boosters Association since 1996.

Fabus currently serves on the Dormont Recreation Board and said he would like to maintain that position.

"I know my predecessor, Laurie Malka, was here for many years and was an extremely hard worker," said Fabus. "I hope to work as hard as she did."

He said he'd like to get more people involved in the Dormont community and would love to help grow the borough's population. In his letter of interest to the council, Fabus wrote, 'I understand the importance of building relationships with individuals and how important it is to treat all individuals with the proper respect. I believe Dormont has much to offer its residents and I'm proud to say that all 5 of my children are making Dormont their home as well.'

Editor's note: This article originally stated—incorrectly—that Fabus's term would end in Dec. 2012. It has been corrected to read that the term will end in Dec. 2013.

Wait a minute...four congratulatory messages in a row, and no one making a political comment...? No uninformed, opinionated rants with no factual basis to them whatsoever? Is this really on the Patch? Congratulations Jeff.

I wish you the best. While I hope you have a great and uneventful term...We all know this is Dormont and that may and probably won’t happen... So ...I hope you fight for the little guy "Dormont’s Small Businesses" & the Residents of Dormont in general and not for your Own Political Agenda. Serving on a Township or Boro's Council should always be for the good of the community not the good of the Individual, And although I probably won't agree with you on everything you vote for I know they picked the best man for the job....Your dedication to Dormont has never wavered…Congratulations Jeff I truly wish you the best.

I think you may have the date wrong for the end of his term. I believe the end date should be 2013.
Leigh October 03, 2012 at 02:36 AM
The article I read states 2013 Daniele. I don't know what you read. It will be nice to have a level head on Council.

Daniele and Leigh...you're both sort of right. I made the correction but forgot to add an editor's note. The article originally said the term ends in Dec. 2012, but it actually ends in Dec. 2013. Sorry. Long day.

Apparently the article I read was the uncorrected, original article.

I also have added information to the article regarding how council voted.

Good for you Jeff! I know you will work hard. Has anyone asked Council or is it known why Jeff was selected over the other candidates?
