Dormont Borough Agenda Meeting Briefs

Not quite enough meat for an article, but you might like to snack on what else went on at council Monday night. We digest it for you.

* Resident Lindsay Rethage said she was concerned about trees in . Some are uprooted and others have low-hanging branches, she said, and that could pose risks for children involved in tyke hikes and camp programs.

Manager Gino Rizza said public works crews are aware, but can’t drive on the rain-soaked grass. The borough was also looking into getting an arborist, he said.

* Mayor Thomas Lloyd urged one more council member to reconsider their yes vote on a revised parking ordinance. Lloyd vetoed the ordinance last month after council voted 5-2 in favor of it.

The ordinance, among other things, would allow for overnight permit parking in borough-owned lots. Lloyd said it would be bad for business owners, residents and would be difficult to enforce.

* Lloyd also questioned a proposal that would do away with the requirement that the police department have four sergeants.

Council Vice President Laurie Malka and Drew Lehman said it gives the borough flexibility. There are times when sergeants aren’t available and another officer must serve as an acting sergeant, Malka said.

Lloyd said council wasn’t likely to add sergeants, but instead would cut the number when a sergeant leaves.

* Resident Jane Fontaine asked if it would be possible to allow cars to park on the opposite side of the street during street cleaning days. Councilwoman Joan Hodson said a problem could be school buses being able to turn on some streets. Lehman said the idea could be looked into.

* Resident George Nelson asked about cameras for police cars. Rizza said the new police car has a camera and he’s looking into grants for the others.
