One Arrested in Brookline Standoff

A 19-year-old was arrested after a SWAT situation at a Brookline home Saturday.

A 19-year-old man was arrested after a standoff at a home on the Brookline-Beechview border Saturday.

Deon Rooney was arrested on Woodward Avenue a few hours after he allegedly assaulted his brother and threated him with a gun in a Plainview Avenue home, a situation that escalated until a SWAT team was called in.

According to Pittsburgh police, officers responded to a home in the 2000 block of Plainview Avenue at 7:12 p.m. Saturday for a report that a 21-year-old man had been assaulted by his younger foster brother, identified as Rooney.

Rooney allegedly took a handgun from the attic of the home, then pistol-whipped and threatened the victim in his bedroom. The victim was able to run from the house and call 911.

A SWAT team and negotiators were called to the house, but did not know Rooney's exact location until 9:20 p.m., when officers received information that Rooney was possibly hiding in a home one block away, in the 1900 block of Woodward Avenue.

Rooney was arrested when he tried to walk to a car parked on that street. Rooney was charged with aggravated assault, tampering or fabricating physical evidence, carrying a gun without a license, and possessing an instrument of crime.

He was taken to Allegheny County Jail.
