Multiple People Shot in Oakland at Western Psych, Two Dead

The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon.

Multiple news sources are reporting this afternoon that several people were shot on the University of Pittsburgh campus after a gunman went into Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC.

Police were dispatched to the incident around 2 p.m., according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Two people are reported to be dead while several have been shot.

UPMC/PittHealth News ‏tweeted, "Police have told us there were 9 total victims at WPIC/Western Psych. 2 of whom have been confirmed dead. 7 being treated at UPMC Presby."

One of the two dead is believed to be a shooter, according to the Twitter account.

UPMC also tweeted that despite several reports, there is no hostage situation at Western Psych.

resident Jason McDonald works in Oakland at Benedum Hall near the scene. He said police told people in his building to stay away from the windows on the first floor. He also said he saw police escorting 20 to 30 people out of the front door from Western Psych.

Western Psych and neighboring buildings are on lockdown at the moment.

The surrounding schools and universities also are on lockdown, including an elementary school. University of Pittsburgh students are currently on spring break.
