Man Arrested After Mistaking Police Officer for Gas Station Attendant

According to Dormont police, the man seemed disoriented and asked an officer to add money to one of the gas pumps.

A Scott Township man was arrested for public drunkenness last week after police said he apparently mistook a Dormont police sergeant for a gas station attendant and asked him to add money to a gas pump.

According to the report from Dormont Police, Officer Tom Mathis and Sgt. James Burke were at the A-Plus Sunoco on West Liberty Avenue on July 31 just after 6 a.m. when a man entered the store wearing khaki shorts, no shirt and one shoe.

The man, identified as Charles Schuetz, 30, approached Mathis, who was in full uniform, and Burke, who was in plainclothes because he was not yet on duty. According to the police report, Schuetz held up a crumpled piece of paper to Burke and asked, “Can I get ten dollars at pump three?”

Police Chief Michael Bisignani said Schuetz did not have a car with him at Sunoco, and that he had walked to the gas station from another location.

Mathis arrested Schuetz without incident and took him to Dormont Police Station, where he was held until he was sober. Schuetz was issued citations for public drunkenness and similar misconduct.
