UPDATE: Banksville Re-opens After Heavy Rains, Mud, Debris

PennDOT crews needed heavy equipment to clear the road.

UPDATE: As of 4:28 p.m., Banksville Road has re-opened in both directions.

UPDATE: As of 2:50 p.m., outbound Banksville Road is open, but the inbound side remains closed.

Wednesday morning's heavy rains carried tons of rocks, mud and debris onto Banksville Road, shutting it down for most of the day between Crane Avenue and the ramp to the Parkway West.

The rush of water deposited several feet of mud and muck underneath the bridge that carries the Parkway over Banksville Road.

Dozens of PennDOT workers, operating several backhoes, worked in sweltering humidity to clear the road.

The water also created a huge sinkhole just a few feet from the southbound lanes. A PennDOT worker said that was the result of a drainage pipe which had been under repair, but clearly couldn't handle the rush of water.

Workers hoped to have the road reopened in time for the evening rush hour.
