DA: No Charges In Dormont Auto Repair Shop Shooting

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office says the Dec. 16 fatal shooting was self-defense.

UPDATED with comment from Miller, additional details.

The owner of a Dormont auto repair shop won't be charged for a would-be robber in December, according to prosecutors.

Bill Miller, of Bethel Park, was acting in self-defense when he shot Lonzy Westbrook on Dec. 16, the Allegheny County District Attorney's office said Friday.

“It all worked out, thank God, for the best,” Miller said Friday. He had been informed of the office’s decision earlier this summer.

The district attorney's office disclosed the outcome of the investigation Friday, but had no further comment.

“Bad guy loses, good guy wins. That would be the issue. And training. Training, training, training,” said Miller, an NRA firearms instructor and Vietnam veteran. “It’s not a safe time to be in America, I really believe that.”

“I didn’t set out to do that that day. All I was doing was doing was defending myself and that young kid (the deliveryman). I’ll be damned if I was going to let him hurt that kid,” he said.

Westbrook, 39, of Pittsburgh, entered Bill's Auto Service on Lima Way, behind West Liberty Avenue, around 11 a.m. He forced Miller and the deliveryman to kneel on the ground and used a stun gun on them, according to investigators.

Westbrook took money from them and Miller's driver's license and walked outside. Miller got his .44 caliber revolver from his desk.

Westbrook returned, pointing his handgun at Miller, and Miller fired once, aiming for Westbrook's chest. Westbrook died of a single gunshot to the head.
