Brookline Man Pleads Guilty in Federal Court Case

Kamil Al-Rifai pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of defrauding the state's welfare department.

A Pittsburgh resident pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of wire fraud, according to a report from the office of United States Attorney David J. Hickton.

Kamil Al-Rifai, 56, of Brookline, pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab on April 24.

According to the court report, Al-Rifai defrauded the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare between Feb. 9, 2012 and Jan. 14, 2013 when he misrepresented that his dependent mother was residing at his home in his application for benefits.

Sentencing for Aug. 22. The law provides for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Al-Rifai, and assistant United States attorney James T. Kitchen is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
