Charges Dropped Against Dormont Woman in Road Rage Case

District Judge Barton withdrew most of the charges on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Charges dropped because victims did not want to participate in prosecution. Click here to read the story.

Amanda Marie Petrelli, whom Baldwin Township police say punched two other women in the face and ran her vehicle into a pedestrian in a November road-rage incident, will not face charges for those allegations, district Magistrate David J. Barton decided on Tuesday.

Barton withdrew Petrelli's charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. A charge against her of driving under the influence of alcohol was waived for Allegheny County Court, where she's scheduled to be formally arraigned on Feb. 6.

According to Baldwin Township police Chief Terrence P. O'Brien, Petrelli, 29, of Tennessee Avenue in Dormont Borough, was involved in a traffic accident at Nov. 13 with another vehicle containing two other women at Baldwin's intersection of Dewalt and Newport drives.

A township resident who witnessed the accident from his porch on Newport—he is the same man who was eventually struck by Petrelli's vehicle—said that Petrelli punched the two other women while all three were standing outside of the two vehicles involved in the crash, O'Brien reported.

When police arrived, Petrelli had gotten back into her vehicle, and they observed the witness yelling at Petrelli to stop driving. At that point, O'Brien said, Petrelli drove straight into the witness, knocking him onto her vehicle's hood.

According to the police report, a Baldwin police officer then commanded Petrelli to stop, but she continued driving away until the officer drew his gun and pointed it at her.

O'Brien said that, when Petrelli exited her vehicle again, the officer smelled alcohol coming from her breath and observed her as having watery and bloodshot eyes. He also found marijuana her vehicle.

Barton is such a weasel. This is probably a friend of one of the staffs he's banging. That guy is such a sleaze ball and acts like he's a Supreme Court Justice.
Carroll Banker December 20, 2012 at 11:42 am
OMG, is this a joke? What if it was a family member of Barton's,?
Gregory Kelly December 20, 2012 at 12:47 pm
OK = exactly what else did this woman need to do - kill someone? My god this magistrate is a damn clown ! A guy like this needs to be removed immediately and charged with impersonating an officer of the court.
Bethany December 20, 2012 at 01:59 pm
Unfortunately, the story presented here does not provide all of the details. Just as media tends to do--the news only provided one side of the case. While violence is never okay, it is important to remember that there is always another side to every story. This woman is a beautiful human being with no prior history of such actions. Please do not judge without having all of the evidence. She deserves a second chance just as we all do. Best wishes to everyone.
Ed M December 20, 2012 at 02:53 pm
Was she driving impaired? Is any of what is reported here true?
Erin Faulk (Editor) December 20, 2012 at 03:19 pm
This article is based on Baldwin Township police reports, court documents, and interviews with the Baldwin Township police chief. As stated in the article, the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch editor has requested an interview with Judge Barton to find out why the charges were dropped. When we have that information, it will be reported as well.
Concerned Citizen December 20, 2012 at 03:33 pm
Really, Bethany? Please don't defend her actions. So...because she has no prior history, they should just ignore this? Ridiculous statement to make. I guess the witness AND the cop are lying, and she is innocent. No one is saying she doesn't deserve a "second chance" but there are consequences for your actions, regardless of whether or not you're a "beautiful human being." Her actions were deplorable and criminal and it's ridiculous that the charges were dropped. Please don't defend her actions. Had she done this to one of your family members or you, I doubt that you'd have the same opinion. Again, actions have consequences. Having no prior history of these types of FELONIES doesn't mean she should get a pass. There are no "details" that would justify her actions, so please quit defending her.
John Q Public December 20, 2012 at 03:36 pm
so Bethany, how can one make a statement like that and not provide anything to back it up? It doesn't matter if she's a "wonderful" woman who never did anything. She did the crime and she's still accountable.
Jenny December 20, 2012 at 04:06 pm
But she does have prior history of acting like this! I've got stories for daaaays. She's just never been in legal trouble for her violence issues. Good thing being a "beautiful person" keeps her from paying the consequences.
MSgt. John DeLallo December 20, 2012 at 04:42 pm
Perhaps Barton was concerned that her self esteem might be damaged, or he gave her a pass because she was having a bad hair day? Does anyone feel as though
Allegheny County has become a safe haven for drug possession and other "victimless" crimes? I'm going to be very interested to see if Barton even talks to the editors/reporters.
Joyce December 20, 2012 at 06:44 pm
I'm guessing part of it is that she is related to some one. On the other hand often the initial charges are dropped when it's a DUI case. She will, if the new penalties on DUI are in fact the way things are operated, pay a pretty good price for this. Not to say I am taking this lightly, but the new penalties are based on your level of intoxication more than anything, and that's how it should be.
Erin Faulk (Editor) December 20, 2012 at 07:08 pm
Justice,
Two things. First, the article clearly states that our Baldwin-Whitehall Patch editor contacted Judge Barton to try to get you an answer as to why the charges were dropped. Since this article was posted, he has been able to do so, and that update will be posted soon. Second, I've deleted your comment. We can't allow accusations to be posted in the comments section without documentation to back them up, as those accusations could be considered libelous. Here are the Patch Terms of Use, which must be followed when commenting: http://dormont-brookline.patch.com/terms

Here's the update. The charges were dropped because the victims didn't want to participate in the prosecution: http://dormont-brookline.patch.com/articles/road-rage-update-victims-did-not-want-to-participate-in-prosecution
Ed Ewing December 20, 2012 at 07:24 pm
A lot of you sound real dumb. I personally know the judge and the woman involved in this case. Judge Barton is very good at what he does. And who knows what really happened that night.... I could call the police and say Mike Tyson just showed up at my house and punched me in the mouth. Doesn't mean it happened. Why not focus on something like child molesters who are out there ruining kids lives and getting less punishment than Amanda probably will. Bottom line is dont open your mouth unless you have at least half a clue what you ate talking about.
DSA December 20, 2012 at 08:24 pm
John's right...this county takes it too easy on criminals.
DSA December 20, 2012 at 08:27 pm
so if you beat someone up and they don't press changes it isn't a crime? i didn't know that. how'd she skate from having marijuana on her? this woman allegedly assaulted people, ran from police, got caught with marijuana and drove drunk and she's getting off on everything but the DUI? what a bargain...please post her lawyer's phone number so i have it on speed dial.
Ed Ewing December 20, 2012 at 08:50 pm
Read the update idiots. Know the facts before you open your big mouth
Concerned Citizen December 20, 2012 at 09:01 pm
Hey Ed, before you start calling people idiots, maybe you should read the story yourself. Just because the VICTIMS don't want to press charges doesn't mean she didn't do it. I don't care WHO you know, clown. The only reason the charges were dropped against her was because the victims refused to cooperate. There's a HUGE difference between being innocent and victims not wanting to cooperate, apparently you can't grasp that. So run your mouth elsewhere.
Concerned Citizen December 20, 2012 at 09:03 pm
And your argument is laughable, although considering how articulate your post is, I shouldn't be surprised. You foolishly said "Why not focus on something like child molesters who are out there ruining kids lives and getting less punishment than Amanda probably will." So because there are worse crimes, she shouldn't be prosecuted? Wow.
It's better to keep your mouth shut and look foolish than to open it and remove all doubt.
Concerned Citizen December 20, 2012 at 09:16 pm
And really, Ed, no one disgraced anybody here. There were witnesses, including one police officer, who saw her commit felonies. She was DUI. They found dope in her car. Really, man, get a grip. Telling the truth isn't disgracing her, she did that all on her own.
John Q Public December 20, 2012 at 10:06 pm
Here's my question..If this happened if front of the cop, why do the victims need to be present? Any interview going towards the DA's office? Who was the representative present at the hearing?
Daniel B December 21, 2012 at 01:03 am
Ed, you are the only one here that sounds "real dumb"
seanpgh December 21, 2012 at 03:28 am
Heed your own advice Ed and delete your post. Come back when you learn how to type.
really December 22, 2012 at 12:33 am
Really Ed? What if they found herion *some people's drug of choice* in her car vs the pot? Would she had gotten away with it then? You should know the answer to that

@MCG - I appreciate how you perceived the situation and I apologize if that was in fact the case.Read More Like I said I was not privy to the exact conversation. However at the time it wasn't explained like that to me so I was unaware and handled it as I interpreted it. My apologies if I was mistaken.
Johann Lynge June 13, 2013 at 04:07 am
@Debbie L. Actually the police have not been to the pub in a long time. The last time they wereRead More there was because I called them because a man who was intoxicated (which we didn't serve because he is barred) came in and refused to leave. And I don't ever recall seeing the fire department there. But to blame it on the Pub is a misconception because even if you closed the pub there are half a dozen other bars on the blvd that everyone would then frequent. While Bob Dobbs recommendation of reinstating prohibition might sound like a good idea good luck with that. Prohibition didn't prevent drinking in the 20's and it wouldn't stop it now either. Ultimately we can not make everyone happy but we do our best to run a safe and friendly establishment. And I make it my personal mission to prevent any and all fights. Since I've been the door man (almost 6 months) we have only had 1 fight in the bar which was quickly broken up. We are not perfect. Nor is any other bar. But we constantly strive to make improvements. We are a community pub. We love our community and everyone in it.
Bob Dobbs June 13, 2013 at 01:23 pm
i should say that out of the handful of bars in the vicinity, i prefer the brookline pub if i'mRead More gonna go to a bar . i dont care for the younger kids that accumulate on saturday nights with that annoying ghetto music but the food specials are decent and they do stock a decent selection of beers . i find zippy's to be much more clique-y and narrow-minded .
Brad Birdwell June 10, 2013 at 09:18 pm
@Daria. My description is 100% accurate. Yes, the bouncer quickly handled the situation by claimingRead More he witnessed "the whole thing". And he did. He witnessed my friends and I waiting to order a drink. That's all. Nothing more. Nothing less. The description is not harsh, it's actually toned down in comparison to what actually happened. The bouncer said, "I witnessed the whole thing and you were being a ****. One customer standing in line to order. One customer flicking another customer's hood and getting in his face. Which one was wrong? Apparently me since I don't go there frequently.
