Former Dormont Volunteer Fireman's Association President Dies in Florida

J. Lewis Shanabarger, better known as "Jay," died on Tuesday, July 2.

J. Lewis Shanabarger, better known as "Jay," died at his home on Tuesday, July 2, in Palm Coast, FL. He was 91.

Shanabarger lived in Dormont for 63 years. He was a member of the Dormont Volunteer Fireman Association from 1960-86 and served as president from 1972-86

Shanabarger was the beloved husband for 67 years of Mary Kathryn "Sunny" Shanabarger; devoted father of Ellen Kay Stucky (Richard) and Janet Susan Smith; and brother of the late Betty Ellen Lochner.

Shanabarger was born October 15, 1921 in Point Marion, PA, a son of the late Alvin H. and Edna (Miller) Shanabarger.

He graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy, Front Royal, VA and attended West Virginia University.

WWII Air Force veteran, Jay served in New Guinea for four years and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge with two Oak Leaves and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with three Bronze stars.

After returning from overseas, he married Mary Kathryn Van Gilder in 1946.

He worked at Crucible Steel and J & L Steel Co. until he retired.

Shanabarger was past commander of McCormick-Dorman VFW post #694, was a member of the American Legion, was a charter member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Fraternal Order of Elks Lodge #2213.
