UPDATE—Poll: Should Smoking Be Allowed at Dormont Pool?

Tell us what you think.

Editor's note: This story was updated at 9:30 a.m. July 25.

At a Council meeting earlier this month, a resident raised concerns about smoking at .

The resident told council it didn't seem like the designated smoking areas were being enforced very well, and that cigarette smoke, as well as cigarette butts on the ground, were a concern with children at the pool.

However, while acknowledging that smoking has taken place at the pool,  Dormont Manager Jeff Naftal said that should not have happened because of an Allegheny County law that prohibits smoking in public places.

"It never has been permitted," he said.

So what do you think? Should it be okay to smoke at the pool? Should it be totally prohibited, or just restricted to certain areas (and enforced)?

smoke somewhere else, morons. it wafts over into the rest of the pool area .
Drew Lehman July 24, 2012 at 12:19 PM
The smoking area at the concession stand didn't work because people didn't just smoke in the designated area. Unfortunately now they are smoking right in front of the entrance. The best spot for a smoking area would be the driveway to the left of the entrance, put a couple urns out and light up.

its a shame people can't police themselves, instead we need 16 year old lifeguards to tell them again and again where they can smoke. maybe the smoke creates a learning disability.

It is a shame people can not go to the pool for a few hours and not smoke. If these parents do not know the dangers of second hand smoke then they need to learn. I agree with Drew, let them go outside by the garage door and smoke away. Hot butts would not feel good burning little feet.

the smoking near the entrance really needs to stop . you are forced to inhale that poison as you walk in .

I say NO SMOKING at all. When I was a kid and use to go to the pool it was disgusting all the cigarette butts laying around being stepped on by wet feet. @ Leigh it is a shame that they can't go to the pool for a few hours and not smoke. As an adult it is your choice to smoke as a parent it is not my choice to have your cigarette smoke going into my kids lungs.

If they have to smoke a designated area would be good but it has to be enforced and like everything else in Dormont, nothing is enforced.

I wouldn't want to tell someone else how to live their life and not smoke. I have enough bad habits of my own I struggle to change and fail at often! However I still try each and every day for making better healthy choices. I would like smoking among other things to DIE and become a part of our past of history that never returns... I have seen to many beautiful people suffer and DIE from its effects. Healthy life styles education doesn't always help everyone... but it's better than doing nothing at all an losing more of the people we love!

Does that mean that smoking at the pool is now prohibited?
Heather Visnesky July 25, 2012 at 05:45 PM
I think it should be prohibited completely, including in front of the entrance. This is a family area, where the majority of the people are children. Outdoors or not, secondhand smoke is still dangerous, especially to developing lungs.

I say live and let live (if only for a while). I don't like the smell of the smoke and I avoid it too, but I believe this country was a better place and people were generally nicer when smoking was prevalent. Its an outlet, a way to let stressed people take a break and interact with other people who have a common habit. I say, let them go! Let them smoke! I have heard there is no worse non-smoker then an ex-smoker, I bet people who discriminate against smokers are primarily ex-smokers. Show some compassion! Its just trendy and cool to be mean to smokers.....the world is a complicated place, everyone has a story....

How do u figure the country was a better place with more smoking ? more lung disease, more stained fingers. smoke all you want but don't do it anywhere that I or anyone who doesn't care for it can smell it is what i'm saying, personally. i am not an ex-smoker , never did anything for me. it's not about trendy or being cool , it's just keeping it real .

it's outside - why should it matter? but regarding the butts in the grass - that should be enforced the same as littering. just bc you smoke doesn't mean you can litter and leave behind butts
Paul Drabick July 26, 2012 at 04:55 PM
Look, I'm an Occasional smoker, and I'll even say it's a bad idea, and not for some trumped up self-righteous second hand smoking nonsense. But rather it's a matter of the butts. Even if you have a proper receptacle for them, some are going to end up on the ground. From there they will be tracked all over and eventualy end up in the pool. No one wants to be floating around and then told they have a butt in their hair. Nobody wants to be a butt head

nadia - the smoke drifts/wafts quite a distance from that back corner refreshments area that people puff away in ... it comes right into the main area of the pool when the wind is blowing the wrong/right direction ... as well as the idiots who sit right in front of the entrance, smoking away and glaring at people ... and yes, the butts laying everywhere is another problem ... so many people in the Pittsburgh area think nothing of littering wherever they go. "somebody else will pick it up so F it, i'll just throw this on the ground . "
Sue July 31, 2012 at 06:45 PM
Absolutely not. Smoking at the pool is my biggest complaint for this year. Swimmers are still smoking in the refreshment area and at the entrance to the pool. Someone at the pool in administration needs to step up and enforce the no smoking.
