No Relief Expected From Sweltering Heat

Keep cranking up the air conditioning because relief from this sweltering summer heat won’t be coming any time soon.

Dan Krzywiecki, chief meteorologist at , said temperatures are expected to hover around 90 degrees for the rest of July.

“It’s the dog days of summer,” Krzywiecki said. “The jet stream has retreated far enough north that it’s displaced by the ‘Big Bermuda’ high pressure system known for its hot and dry air.”

That has led to temperatures about 5 to 10 degrees above normal.

But he said the region isn’t experiencing a heat wave. Krzywiecki said this area endures a heat wave only where there are five-consecutive days with temperatures in the 90s. There have been just six days all year with temperatures at that threshold.

That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t be cautious about the warmer weather. People should wear light clothing that reflect the sun and make sure to stay hydrated. Animals should not be exercised excessively and dogs should be brought inside if possible.

Due to the weather, Allegheny County has extended the hours at several senior centers around the area. A full list of the cooling centers can be found on the county’s website.

Krzywiecki said relief will likely come in August when it’s somewhat cooler, but still hotter than most average summers.

“It won’t be normal or cooler, but it shouldn’t be quite as bad (as July),” Krzywiecki said.
