Liberty Tunnels Open Through Weekend in Pittsburgh

Closures for repairs will resume Monday night.

The Liberty Tunnels will remain open through this weekend, PennDOT has announced.

Liberty Tunnel closures will resume on Monday night, Sept. 5. Nightly closures will continue from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights in both directions of the tunnel through Oct. 1.

Crews are performing concrete repairs on the facades at both entrances to the tunnel.

The $8 million Phase III Liberty Tunnel project includes concrete repairs, lighting system replacement, painting and other improvements. Wellington Power Corp. is the prime contractor.

The 5,889-foot-long tunnels were built in 1924. Approximately 45,000 vehicles use the tunnels on an average day.
