Deasy Shares Unclaimed Property Info

The Pennsylvania Treasury Department receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property every year. The unclaimed property they receive is from checks that were not cashed, forgotten stocks, items from safety deposit boxes, neglected bank accounts, expired gift certificates, life insurance policies and other items that have not been claimed by their owners. By the 15th of April each year, organizations, businesses and government entities in Pennsylvania must file an unclaimed property report. 

More than $234 million in new unclaimed property was reported to the PA Treasury Department in recent months. As a result, the Pa Treasury Department is mailing 40,000 letters to Pennsylvania residents who may be entitled to unclaimed property. In an effort to assist residents who would like to file a claim for unclaimed property, I will host a PA Treasury Hunt at my constituent service office located at 436 S. Main St., Suite 100, in the West End from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 13-14. I invite constituents to stop by my office to obtain information on unclaimed property and learn how you can safely claim what is rightfully yours.

The Pennsylvania Department of Treasury has noted that approximately 1 in every 10 Pennsylvanians has unclaimed property. You can visit its web site at www.patreasury.gov and search your name or the names of your friends and family.

In addition, if you think that you may have unclaimed property in another state, you may visit a free national database created by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators at www.missingmoney.com. ACS Unclaimed Property Clearinghouse operates the national database. Besides Pennsylvania, they work with 38 other states; Alberta, Canada, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
