Dormont Athletic Boosters Association

The Dormont Patch has been kind enough to offer DABA space on this site to write a blog. We thank them for this opportunity.

In 1949, 13 individuals met in the basement of Phil Becker’s home on Eastmont Avenue to form the Dormont Athletic Boosters Association (DABA).  The goal of the group was to raise money to buy jackets for the senior varsity athletes at Dormont High School.  The original 13 members were:

 E.J. Munier

Hal Dangerfield

Since then, DABA has gone on to provide financial and administrative support for many activities including Football, Cheerleading, Boosterettes and Baseball.  In the past, DABA also sponsored Track & Field, Bowling and has been involved in providing financial support to the Dormont Library, Keystone Oaks High School Athletics, D.A.R.E, and the Dormont Playground Project.

In 1995, DABA started a program that rewarded a deserving Dormont senior high school student attending Keystone Oaks or Seton LaSalle High Schools with a $ 2,500 scholarship.  The first winner was Michael Ryan Pfeuffer who attended Duquesne University and earned a law degree.

In 1999, DABA was asked to oversee the pee-wee baseball and girls slow pitch softball programs formally under the direction of the Dormont Recreation Department.  A few years after that, DABA was approached by a KO School Board member, Tom Nee and asked if we would consider starting a fast-pitch softball program.  We did and this has been a very successful program.

Two years ago we started a flag football program that has attracted over 100 children from the KO School District.

Today DABA is made up of 32 active volunteers and 10 honorary members.  As an organization we have by-laws we follow and have 21 committees that oversee the various activities we support.  We have several fundraisers that are held on a yearly basis: Monte Carlo in February, Door-to-Door in June, DABA All-Star Baseball Tournament in July, Golf Outing in August and a Halloween Party in October.  Because of these fundraisers we are financially independent and receive no financial support from the borough of Dormont.  Through the generous support of the residents of the community, DABA has been able to fund projects that continue to provide our children the best and safest playing areas.  In the past 10 years DABA made the following improvements to Pop Murray Field:  resurfaced the infield, Installed new lights, replaced the bleachers, installed plastic covers on the fences to prevent injuries, replaced, enlarged and painted the backstop, added extra fencing at the dugouts for additional safety, added a batting cage, replaced outdated football, baseball and softball equipment and updated the concession stand.

Moving forward our goal is to continue to work hard for the children who participate in our programs.  But we could use your help.  DABA is always looking for new members committed to continuing the fine work started back in 1949.  If you are interested in learning more about DABA or are interested in becoming a member, please visit our website at www.dormontboosters.com.
