Hollywood Event Honors Elvis with Movie, Charity

Special event will honor The King's 77th birthday.

Elvis will be in the building—, that is—on Sunday for a special event to honor The King’s 77th birthday.

The theater will show “Blue Hawaii” (1961) twice on Sunday, and in true birthday party fashion, there will be gifts— Elvis PEZ dispensers, mugs, framed pictures and more will be given away as door prizes.

Dormont native and We Remember Elvis Fan Club President Priscilla Parker said the event will be an opportunity for Elvis fans to celebrate both his birthday and his generous character.

“He was very charitable, and I think a lot of people don’t know that about him,” Parker said. “He was just an all-around good guy.”

Elvis frequently gave to charities, Parker said, particularly those in the Memphis area. She said he was known for visiting charities and hospitals on Christmas Eve and writing them checks. A benefit concert he held raised about $50,000, which helped fund the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

Parker said Elvis fan clubs pay it forward in the singer’s memory, and contribute to local charities. The We Remember Elvis Fan Club donated $2,012 to the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center in Memphis this year and also donates frequently to the West Penn Hospital Burn Unit.

“Blue Hawaii” will be shown this Sunday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. For details, call the Hollywood at 412-344-2958.
