"We love the new building. It's so bright and cheery. It's good for patients," said Sally Child, adolescent therapist and resident.

The facility celebrated its grand opening Tuesday with tours, refreshments, and speaker Dr. Abraham Twerski, founder of Gateway Rehab.

Twerski opened the first Gateway Rehab center in 1972 while he was serving as clinical director of St. Francis Hospital's department of psychiatry. He said there was no place in Pittsburgh to help alcoholics or drug addicts and the St. Francis detox unit became a revolving door.

After much work, the first Gateway Rehab Center was built in Aliquippa, according to Lewis. Twerski said it was the first center built from the ground up for alcoholism and drug addiction and he hoped it sent a message to patients that they deserved the best.

"My personal philosophy is I see the good in each individual. Society sees alcoholics and drug addicts as outcasts and they see themselves as outcasts. You have to see yourself as good and invaluable and that's where rehab starts," Twerski said.

According to Lewis, Gateway Rehab now has 22 locations throughout western Pennsylvania and Ohio, with the new Gateway Rehab Center in McMurray providing service to the South Hills.

"We're hoping that young people and parents come to get educated. It (alcoholism and drug addiction) ruins families, destroys marriages and takes a chunk out of the workplace," Twerski said. "I want people to know the earlier they come, the better chance of recovery."

The new address for Gateway Rehab South is 375 Valley Brook Road, Suite 102,
McMurray, PA 15317 and the phone number is 724-941-4126. Click here for its website.
