Miracle Field Opening Day Revealed

The Pirates Charities Miracle League of the South Hills Field will open the same day as the Upper St. Clair Community and Recreation Center's outdoor pool.

The Pirates Charities Miracle League of the South Hills Field will open on Saturday, May 26, and a special event this Saturday will help support it.

Casey's Clubhouse, the organization that has raised nearly $1 million for the construction of the field, is working to raise more money to finalize construction costs and earn enough money to maintain the field. They've teamed up with the Washington Wild Things for the next fundraiser—the 2012 Washington Wild Things Hot Stove. The dinner will be hosted by former Pittsburgh Steeler Dermontti Dawson and feature special guests Sean Casey, Bob Walk, Lanny Frattare and Chris Bando. The event will take place from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the DoubleTree at Hilton Racetrack Road. Tickets are $50 each. Contact Andrea at 724-250-7646 for more information. The field is uniquely designed to give children of all abilities the opportunity to play baseball. The field is equipped with various amenities including a completely rubberized and flat surface, power outlets in the dugouts and bathrooms available on site.

One of the most important parts of the Miracle League program is the buddy system. Players are paired with other children (12 years or older) or adults in the community for help running the bases and fielding the balls. The league is accepting registration for these critical buddy roles and other volunteers, including those who may want to coach, announce or umpire. Click here to volunteer.
