Video: Sunshine & Horseshoes, a Dormont Tradition

Thursday night in Dormont means horseshoes, laughter and good stories.

One of my favorite memories of growing up in Dormont is spending summer evenings hanging out in the parking lot of the Dormont Pool, watching the guys pitching horseshoes. There was something so musical about that “clinking” sound when the horseshoe hit the post. Even better were the stories, the jokes and the laughter, as the sun would disappear from the sky.

Founded in the late 1950s, the Dormont Horseshoe Club is one of the oldest clubs around the world of Pennsylvania horseshoes.

I joined the gang on a fine summers night to learn a bit about the game. My first mistake was asking how far they threw the horseshoe … they don’t throw they pitch and the horseshoes they pitch aren’t actually meant for the foot of a horse.
