Ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes Runs With Aiken Elementary Students

Ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes rode in on a fire truck and ran away with the day at Aiken Elementary.

With a sunny sky and a crowd of enthusiastic elementary students, their parents and runners from around the Pittsburgh area on hand, Dean Karnazes and the "Regis & Kelly's Run Across America" gang rolled up to Aiken Elementary School Wednesday morning. The ultramarathoner came not only for a 5K race but to share his passion for running and its healthy benefits.

In collaboration with Action for Healthy Kids, a national volunteer organization dedicated to the prevention of childhood obesity and malnutrition, Karnazes started running a series of 5K in February that has taken him from one side of the country to the other. Karnazes had hit the 2,500 mile mark on Tuesday with another 450 miles to go before he reaches the New York studios of  "Live with Regis and Kelly" in New York City.

Wednesday's event also included the Pittsburgh Pirates Pirate who ran the course with feathers flying and 50 members of the Dick's Sporting Goods team that will be running in the Pittsburgh Marathon on May 15.
