Recipe of the Week: Crock Pot Deer Chili

Try this chili recipe to warm you up on a cold winter day.

I wanted to try something different for my Super Bowl party this year and thought it doesn’t get any more unique than deer chili stewing in a slow cooker.

I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but it ended up being a fantastic meal made all the more tasty by Tom Brady’s futile Hail Mary pass into the end zone as time expired in Super Bowl XLVI.

Now, if you don’t have access to deer meat or if you’re not a big fan of venison, ground beef should also work with this recipe.

3 lbs. ground deer  (or ground chuck)
1 (1 lb.) can tomatoes
1/2 cup water
1 chopped onion
1 chopped green pepper
1 clove garlic
1 can chili beans
2 tsp. chili powder
1 can chili beef soup

First, lightly brown the beef in a skillet. Put in slow cooker or crock pot. Add tomatoes, water, onion, chili powder, soup, chili beans, garlic and green pepper. I cut the onions and pepper pretty thick and they cooked down to a size that was still easy to eat. Set on low to low-medium heat setting for about 6 hours. Serve in a bowl or with rice.
