Dormont VFD Car Raffle Under Way

Dormont Volunteer Fire Department's annual car raffle has begun, and this year's prize is a Volkswagen.

There's a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle Special Edition Turbo parked in the lot of Dormont Village Plaza, and the plans to send it home with a lucky winner on July 4.

The Beetle is the car that marks the fire department's annual raffle this year. Tickets are just $2 each, and a drawing to choose the winner will be July 4 in , right after the fireworks.

"This is our first week and it always starts slow, but it always picks up toward the end," said Deputy Chief Jeff Arnold. "It's a neat little car."

The winner will have the option to take either the car or the $18,000 cash equivalent.

Proceeds from ticket sales help the fire department pay for the things they need to keep residents—and themselves—safe: new safety gear, equipment, insurance and training courses.

Members of the fire department will be selling tickets in the Dormont Village parking lot from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.
