Dormont Salon Giving Away Hair Makeovers

If you know someone who deserves a little pampering, wants to hear about it.

The Dormont hair salon will give away one complete hair makeover a month throughout 2012 for its “I Need a Hair Makeover” contest, and it is asking residents to nominate contestants through Facebook or email, or in person. Each month, a winner will be chosen based on the number of nominations and Facebook “Likes” a person receives, or by dint of a compelling story.

Nominees must know they are being nominated, and the salon will allow nominators to post photos of the makeover-hopefuls on its Facebook page.

Kara Kearns, a stylist at Sergio’s, said the contest is intended for people who could use a pick-me-up. By way of example, Kearns said, a good contestant might be someone who hasn’t changed hairstyles in a long time; someone who has lost weight and could use a new cut to match; or someone who has struggled through a challenging time, such as a health issue.

“We want to give back,” Kearns said.

The contest also gives the salon an opportunity to reach out to folks who may pass by the salon frequently but don’t stop in, Kearns said.

“We have a lot of clients from all over,” she said. “But, oddly enough, we don’t have many from our neck of the woods.”

The salon itself has been around for decades, Kearns said, but has experienced a revitalization since Sergio Pampena came took the helm five years ago. Before that time, Pampena had spent several years touring the world to educate stylists while he worked under Paul Mitchell’s global artistic director.

“It’s a lot more modern now,” Kearns said.

Aside from hair cuts, coloring and conditioning treatment, the salon also does body waxing, spray tanning and make up. All customers receive a head and neck massage in the salon’s “Wash House,” a spa-like room featuring a wall of water that cascades from ceiling to floor.
