Dormont Borough Hears Possible Plans to Address Athens Alley Flooding

In a public meeting last week, an environmental engineering firm presented possible plans for addressing flooding in Athens Alley.

Dormont Borough is in the process of considering plans to address flooding issues along Athens Alley, and heard last week from a firm helping to find solutions to the issue.

Environmental engineering firm Hazen & Sawyer has been examining the flooding problem, and presented findings and possible fixes March 18, at a meeting to address the issue of regular flooding between Texas and Annex avenues.

The PowerPoint the company presented at the meeting is attached to this article in PDF format. It is also available on the Dormont Borough website.

Hazen & Sawyer identified several issues with the alley's current layout. As noted in the PowerPoint, storm sewers are undersized. There are too few inlets, and those that exist are poorly located, among other issues.

The flooding has led to personal property damage, including toppled fences and retaining walls, and landscaping damage.

The firm developed four alternate storm sewer configurations that could alleviate the problem, although in some scenarios traffic issues and parking challenges would occur while work is being done. Costs for these configurations would range from $289,000 to $464,000, depending on the scenario.

"Green" options, such as tree boxes and rain gardens, also are possibilities to alleviate the issue, with costs varying widely depending on the scenario.

Plans for each possible option are detailed in the attached PDF.

Hazen & Sawyer representatives plan to finalize the presentation to include comments and concerns from borough officials and residents and present the final information to council at the May 6 meeting.
