"Dig In" to Archaeology-Themed Summer Program at Dormont Library

Dormont Public Library's Summer Reading Program has a lineup of unique events  tailored to budding archaeologists, and paleontologists, oceanographers and geologists—or anyone who wants to know more about those areas.

The theme is "Dig Into Reading" for Read to Me and elementary school ages, and "Beneath the Surface" for young adults.

Program highlights include:

  • A Summer Reading Kick-off Party for all ages on June 22 at 11 a.m. The event features a special presentation by a Meadowcroft Village representative, who will talk about prehistoric native American villages in Western Pennsylvania.
  • An Egyptian Cultural Day for all ages on July 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will play mummy-themed games, get royal necklaces, read hieroglyphs, search through an artifact treasure chest, learn Egyptian calligraphy, talk about archaeological digs and more.
  • Carnegie Science Center will present a Geology and Archaeology lesson July 31 at 10:30 a.m. for children in preschool through second grade. Children will be able to screen for rocks and artifacts, open geodes and reconstruct pottery.
  • The closing party will be Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. for all ages. The event will feature special guest Josh Hoover, a local Paleo Artist who will bring samples of his life-like dinosaur artwork.
These are just a few of the programs offered this summer. For the full schedule of summer reading program activities, see the Dormont Public Library website.

Registration is requested for all Summer Reading programs. To register, call 412-531-8754, or sign up at the library between June 22 and Aug. 3.
