Bus Stuck On Potomac Avenue

A Pittsburgh firefighter said the driver of the bus, which was carrying a youth hockey team, was following GPS directions.

A bus carrying a youth hockey team from Michigan to a tournament at the Ice Castle Arena became stuck as the driver tried to drive up the steep Pomomac Avenue hill on Monday morning, causing minor traffic tieup at Banksville Road.

Pittsburgh firefighter Tom Weichler was getting his truck reparied at the nearby Firestone Auto when he saw the bus become stuck around 11 a.m. and called in for a wrecker.

Weichler said the driver told him he was following his GPS, which directed him off the Parkway and into Gree Tree, then across Potomac, to get to the Ice Castle.

Wiechler said GPS units are designed for cars, not buses or trucks, which can become stuck on steep Pittsburgh-area streets - a scenario he said is becoming more common as the devices grow in popularity.

The players did make it to the tournament.
