Shovel Your Walks Or Be Reported

I've had enough.  Shovel your walks.  Not just from your door to your car.  If you live on a corner, too bad.  Nobody told you life was fair.  Starting tomorrow, the house number of any sidewalk not cleaned up on Chelton, Berkshire, Freedom, Hobson, Merrick and Creedmore is being reported to the City with photographs.  If you made a reasonable effort, I'm not turning you in.  If you cannot clean your walk, find someone to do it.  You made a contract with the City when you moved in to maintain safe passage on the walks.  Get to it.  You've been warned.

i agree. my mom fell yesterday. the person who lives two houses down from us did a crappy job on their sidewalk. and they didnt do near the curb. she got out of her car, got onto the sidewalk, started walking towards our house and fell. she hit her knees, elbows and hands. I live in beechview up on broadway and people up here are really bad with doing their sidewalks. sometimes if a house is empty no one does it at all during the winter. or some houses that have people live in them dont do them eaither

Leaving threatening comments with a pseudonym is pretty brave. Why don't you offer to help the elderly or the disabled clear their walks? Rent a snow blower, buy some ice melt if you can find it. They have this really cool job in Pittsburgh called Code Enforcement Officer. If you want to be a junior Wyatt Earp, put in an application.

Yeah, I would think if you are already through those areas turning people in, it would be more beneficial for you to shovel the driveway. Be part of the solution and not a pain.

its not his job to do other peoples work. its their place that they are living its their responsibility.

I can't believe anyone would defend people who don't clean their walks. For the record, most of these are nice homes with nice cars parked in front or in the driveway. Some are absentee landlords not taking care. And, I even said that if you made a reasonable effort, I wasn't after you. I cannot understand the mindset of people who would defend people who don't find a way to get their walk cleaned. I have my own and I clean it. I'm assuming those of you who are complaining that I don't take it on myself to take care of the entire community have not bothered to shovel your walks either. Lazy. Thoughtless.

you are right spiltpop. if you can afford to live some where u can afford to shovel your own walk, have kids you can ask to shovel your walk or even pay some one to do it. my husband does it or the people that live on the first floor my parents (their friend) does it on a regular basis to keep it clean. my mom fell the other day because of lazy people 2 doors down barely did it and didnt salt so left ice spots and u have to walk on the sidewalk i live on buzy street so you cant walk in the street all the time to avoid snow and ice

To all who are complaining about sidewalks.......take a moment and consider......some people are disabled or elderly........while you are complaining........maybe help.........the City of Pittsburgh has a great volunteer program called Snow Angels........I have been on their list for three years now and because of the lack of volunteers.......no one has shown up to do my sidewalk........oh by the way I have a heart condition......so what little I can manage is a threat to me.........not all people are lazy........

my dad is disabled. on oxygen and other health issues but he found some one to help him a friend of the family. its not that hard to find some one to do it

If you have been on snow angels for three years, maybe that's not the best route. there might be a neighbor, a boy scout or girl scout troop, or whoever mows your lawn, a relative? You are saying you have a heart condition, how would that heart condition do if you fell on someone's walk early in the morning when it's near 0 degrees and maybe no one sees you for a few hours? I have to walk to the bus in the mornings. I never see a person out till I'm at the bus stop. But, every day these past few weeks, I've had to risk falling just to get to my job. I risk falling on ice and snow when I have to carry bags from the store. I hate to say this, but if I ever get to the point where I cannot do my own walk and I cannot find or afford someone to do it for me, I will be thinking about moving to an apartment or condo where I don't have to worry about it anymore. It could ease your burdens if you consider that.

Oh...I would think if you are on the city program and it is failing, you wouldn't be cited.

Trisha, thanks for that info. It's good to know that along with some of our complaints, we can depend on helping each other find solutions for some of them.
