Treat Yourself at 5 Local Mom-and-Pop Ice Cream Shops

July is National Ice Cream Month, apparently. Let's celebrate!

Every month seems to have its own designation, its own reason for celebration, and July's is apparently ice cream.

July is National Ice Cream Month, according to the International Dairy Foods Association, and has been since 1984, when President Ronald Reagan designated it as such to recognize a treat 90-percent of Americans enjoy.

Not that we need an excuse to enjoy ice cream—but we are running out of time in July.

Here are five local Mom-and-Pop ice cream shops, from Brookline to Bridgeville, to celebrate your favorite treat this month. Click the highlighted links for more information:

  • Scoops on the Boulevard at 719 Brookline Boulevard. It's got a website and a Facebook page where you can check out flavors, hours and events.
  • Ok, so this isn't technically an ice cream shop—but The Sweet Shoppe & Nut House has gelato which, if you're Italian, is pretty close. It's at 1597 Washington Pike in Collier Township.
