5 Stats You Don’t Know About Brookline

Dozens of cool statistics about Brookline were presented at a recent community meeting. Here are some things you might not know about the neighborhood.

Did you know that Brookline is the second largest neighborhood in the City of Pittsburgh? That the average home costs $99,000? Or that there are 137 businesses on the Boulevard?

EvolveEA presented this information during a recent community meeting to discuss the identity and “rebranding” of Brookline. Christine Mondor of EvolveEA shared the information in a report the organization did about the community and its residents.

The information in the report is based mainly on data from the 2010 Census, American Community Survey, and Google maps.

Here are some interesting statistics from the report:

  • Based on 2010 Census data, the population of Brookline is 13,122, down from 15,384 in 1990. The community currently has 5,914 households.
  • The median age of Brookline residents is 42, and most residents are between the ages of 35 and 54. To compare, the median age of Pittsburgh residents is 33, and the median age in the United States is 37.5. Age groups in Brookline are evenly distributed, meaning that there is not an abundance of much younger or much older people.
  • Five out of six Brookliners are high school graduates, and two out of six Brookliners have a higher education degree.
  • About 75-percent of Brookliners drive alone to work, but Mondor said that number could be skewed because of several factors, including recent transit cuts.
  • The median household income in Brookline is $41,891, compared to $34,896 in the City of Pittsburgh and $50,157 in the Unites States.
