@MCG - I appreciate how you perceived the situation and I apologize if that was in fact the case.…Read More Like I said I was not privy to the exact conversation. However at the time it wasn't explained like that to me so I was unaware and handled it as I interpreted it. My apologies if I was mistaken.

@Debbie L. Actually the police have not been to the pub in a long time. The last time they were…Read More there was because I called them because a man who was intoxicated (which we didn't serve because he is barred) came in and refused to leave. And I don't ever recall seeing the fire department there. But to blame it on the Pub is a misconception because even if you closed the pub there are half a dozen other bars on the blvd that everyone would then frequent. While Bob Dobbs recommendation of reinstating prohibition might sound like a good idea good luck with that. Prohibition didn't prevent drinking in the 20's and it wouldn't stop it now either. Ultimately we can not make everyone happy but we do our best to run a safe and friendly establishment. And I make it my personal mission to prevent any and all fights. Since I've been the door man (almost 6 months) we have only had 1 fight in the bar which was quickly broken up. We are not perfect. Nor is any other bar. But we constantly strive to make improvements. We are a community pub. We love our community and everyone in it.

i should say that out of the handful of bars in the vicinity, i prefer the brookline pub if i'm…Read More gonna go to a bar . i dont care for the younger kids that accumulate on saturday nights with that annoying ghetto music but the food specials are decent and they do stock a decent selection of beers . i find zippy's to be much more clique-y and narrow-minded .

@Daria. My description is 100% accurate. Yes, the bouncer quickly handled the situation by claiming…Read More he witnessed "the whole thing".
And he did. He witnessed my friends and I waiting to order a drink. That's all. Nothing more. Nothing less. The description is not harsh, it's actually toned down in comparison to what actually happened. The bouncer said, "I witnessed the whole thing and you were being a ****.
One customer standing in line to order.
One customer flicking another customer's hood and getting in his face.
Which one was wrong? Apparently me since I don't go there frequently.

jjkre3, that statement is totally inappropriate. No one is "for" abortion. Many people…Read More support the right of women and their healthcare providers to choose abortion when it is the right decision for them. And cc, that doesn't make President Obama a communist, either.

Reason is a really good response to fear.
Understand that increased public fear doesn't make a…Read More bad event more likely. It just gives politicians and businesses something to prey on.
My Dad worked in intelligence for his whole career and back in the seventies; they worried about terrorist flying plans into buildings. It’s not like the powers that be never thought about it before then. And just because something happens doesn't mean it is more likely to happen again.
JS April 26, 2013 at 12:18 pm
Whatever keeps you going is what works for you. I choose reason also, rather than faith in something…Read More I can't see and can't believe exists. To each his own.
I don't take the second or third look at the "darker skinned man wearing unconventional clothing", knowing that most of the mass killers in this country have been white. I am not going to have any control over a terrorist wanting to fly planes into buildings. White men with an overabundance of anger, mental instability and firearms, black men trying to protect their drug-selling turf by stockpiling weapons and firing at will on our streets - these are the realistic stereotypes of people who kill in our country and the people that I can try to avoid.
While every few years we get reminded that there are terrorists out there that don't like our country, our homegrown terrorists kill far more and are far more likely to touch our own lives at any given time.

school districts, municipalities, state abs federal government's have spent budget surplus over the…Read More last several decades at an alarming rate. I applaud the effort. Curious where the extra $9.5 million / year will come from though.
Also, it'd…Read More be nice if legislators would stop perpetuating fear and politicizing recent tragedies. Phrases like "...working to prevent another Sandy Hook from occurring." is absurd. It is absolutely impossible to PREVENT crazy people from doing crazy things.
If the Bill is good, then let it speak for itself and just give us the facts, e.g., SB10 puts the proper tools in place to handle armed people on school property before they can get too far like the armed guard in Atlanta (http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/world/55742445-68/police-shooting-parents-students.html.csp), teacher in Taft (http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/01/10/169055098/reports-two-hurt-one-suspect-in-custody-after-shooting-at-calif-school), etc.
Is that too much to ask? As a Nation, we're already on edge... talk like this only makes it worse.

What is the point of a Representative…Read More Democracy if we're all living and dying at the mercy of corporations like UPMC and Highmark?

Insurance companies shouldn't even exist. They help drive up health care costs.…Read More
http://imap.marcomannino.com/healthcare/policy/cost_health_administration.pdf
Even when government intervenes to improve the health care system, they botch it up by empowering the insurance companies. Obamacare increased health care 'coverage' (not access to service, not decrease health care costs) by increasing health insurance coverage through a) health insurance mandates and b) health insurance subsidies.
Our Representative Democracy gave us that turd of a bill that has caused health insurance premiums to escalate since being signed by the President. When will the costs start going down? They won't. http://www.forbes.com/sites/sallypipes/2013/01/07/obamacare-guarantees-higher-health-insurance-premiums-3000-higher/
Our Representative Democracy also gives us the freedom to start and run a business as we choose (within the constraints of regulatory agencies), and the freedom to make medical decisions for ourselves instead of hospitals, government bodies, etc.

Jason..as you say "it's easy to attack people that you know nothing about" Next time you…Read More go to "The Center" to watch a little league game (you go don't you?) look at the Team Winners (carved into the wall) for 1981 and you will see my Companies name. My comments are not personal attacks on you, rather I am offering a challenge to younger people like you to "go into action" and "do something" rather than complain and criticize what you see.
If I am the voice of the past and you are the voice of the future then just remember, without a lot of old people like me, doing things behind the scene, Brookline would now be Beltzhoover and you wouldn't be living here , would you?
So channel all your energy into something positive and see if that doesn't feel better.
Good luck with your business venture, don't procrastinate, just do it!!

I'm going to say one more thing and be done because I've got better things to do than trade barbs…Read More with Bob. I've done four articles in this series. They've been quite popular. You're the ONLY one who has shown up here to voice a negative reaction to them. Repeatedly. You can whine about them all you want; it's not going to stop me. I'm just going to ignore you from here on out

I'd like to add to this:
If you're reading this and you're thinking about attending a four-year…Read More college, or any sort of collegiate career that invokes a financial investment - DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
I do think that you should do the homework that is assigned to you during your time at whatever university you choose; however, I am mostly referring to understanding your loans, your inevitable debt (unless you're fortunate enough not to have any), and what a mistake it is to put them off until the last minute.
Here is a good read for recent grads, but it's never too early to understand what you're getting yourself into. http://projectonstudentdebt.org/recent_grads.vp.html
I hope this helps.

The entire country's transportation infrastructure is in awful condition. See…Read More http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/transit/ So is water infrastructure-- remember the referendum for taking on $400 million in debt to start making improvements to the water infrastructure. Makes you wonder where all the 'taxes/fees for government services' actually goes.
Something the report highlights is the increasing cost of materials, labor, and maintenance. It also emphasizes efforts at reducing costs. So rather than looking for new ways to screw over taxpayers with new fees and taxes, why not look at ways of optimizing the revenue already being taken in? How about starting with a salary cut and office budget cut for all government officials? How about cutting the daily per diem (us common folk pay for living expenses from our salary)? How about cutting the annual raise?
$2.1 billion per month is spent on full-time employees, and $180 million per month is spent on part-time employees. Since progressives love the regressive income tax so much, let's see something truly 'progressive' like a regressive governmental salary cut! A flat 10% cut would yield $2.8 billion... there's your transportation funding gap.
