Dormont police are asking drivers to be more vigilant around Dormont Elementary School, and to obey posted crosswalks, drop-off areas and stop signs.

Police Sgt. James Burke said the police recently received complaints of drivers who are not obeying the 15mph speed limit, and are not stopping at crosswalks during morning and afternoon hours when children are crossing the street to and from school.

They've also received complaints that people crossing the street are not crossing at the crosswalks, and that parents are not using designated drop-off areas to drop off and pick up their children.

"There are two crosswalks up there, but people are cutting across the block rather than using them," Burke said. "It's there for the benefit of the children."

Burke said police have stepped up patrols in that area, and are warning people to follow posted signs.
